Father: Privilege or Necessity?
If anyone is like me, this can be a bit tricky. Growing up with a single working mom was tough. Many that know me will tell you I had the meanest mom on the planet. No nonsense was allowed in our house. She played no games. Did my mom even smile…. Me, my mom and little sister we’re all that occupied our home for what seemed like forever. My mother’s full time job was the Airforce and her 2nd job was us. I didn’t see my mom date but she made sure I did my homework and stayed out of trouble. I also didn’t get pregnant in high school or do drugs. As a matter a fact, I defied statistics. I went to college and I eventually graduated (after taking time off to find myself) and landed a nice career and even started a business. To accomplish these things as a woman is hard enough so imagine being a minority. Nonetheless, my mother was strong. I know, this is about Father’s Day so back to the original point. I was grown and out the house by the time she remarried a wonderful man and I have 2 dads. How do you deal with having two dads? My biological father was a stranger I never knew. As I’ve grown, naturally I began to get to know and grew to love him. I did not know much about him growing up but spending time with my biological father helped me understand myself. That gift… priceless.
My mom married a terrific man who I love so much! I have an additional 3 siblings as a result. He makes my mom happy. That makes me happy. She deserves so much. Lots of smiles when they are together. He even walked me down the isle on my wedding day. So as I go through the many search engines trying to find the best approach to Father’s day this year, at least I know I’m blessed to have the love, admiration and understanding of two great men. I have two fathers that adore me and my heart smiles just thinking about it….
To answer my original question, I don’t know if having a father is an absolute necessity. What I do know is having wonderful fathers in the world is a gift. Today I would not trade my fathers for the world!
Happy Fathers Day!
